Student Support Specialist
West Michigan Academy of Arts & Academics is seeking a Student Support Specialist.
West Michigan Academy of Arts & Academics is a TK-8 public school academy chartered by Grand Valley State University. We are located in Spring Lake and our students come from many surrounding districts in Ottawa and Muskegon counties. WMAAA focuses on arts integration and high academic achievement. We have a great team of teachers and staff who have been supporting and educating creative, artistic, and academically high achieving students for over 25 years! Position: Full-time K-8 Student Support Specialist. Partner Solutions is seeking a licensed professional counselor for West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics (WMAAA), a public-school academy in Spring Lake, MI.
Duties: Include providing support to all K-8 students. Support students’ success in school – socially and educationally. Other duties include, but are not limited to, attending regular staff meetings, serving on school-related committees and participating in professional growth and development conferences.
Qualifications
- Valid Professional Counseling License or School Counselor License
- Experience effectively supporting students with emotional regulation, focusing on learning, culturally aware, and the ability to work independently and as a team
- Knowledge and experience with psychological and social development of students K-8
- Demonstrated ability to inspire and engage students in both classroom and extracurricular settings
- Proven organizational skills in coordinating meeting with students – individually and groups
- Commitment to inclusive practices and fostering a safe, supportive environment for all learners
Responsibilities
- Provide mental health support and interventions to all students as needed, including responsive services during student crises
- Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum across all grade levels
- Collaborate with the special education team and ensure consistent care and communication
- Lead and coordinate Student Support Team (SST) meetings, including managing documentation, timelines, and follow-ups
- Review SST referrals and ensure appropriate Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) interventions are in place and monitored
- Assist in the implementation of Tier 2 interventions, including small groups, check-in/check-out, and behavior support plans
- Attend monthly school parent information evening meeting to share mental health strategies and resources with families
- Create and distribute a monthly mental health newsletter for families that highlights focus areas, practical tools, and community resources
- Create monthly bulletin board with the SEL topic of the month, meet with classrooms to share this information with students
- Continue monthly student group meetings about social topics with the School Social Worker
- Provide individual support to students daily when the need arises
- Work closely with administration and School Social Worker
- Cooperate with teachers, parents, Mosaic counseling, and community members
- Offer individual help to students to emotional regulation during the school day
- Perform other duties as assigned
