Old Redford Academy is hiring a Family Engagement Specialist.  

Old Redford Academy has new leadership, new direction and a new commitment to academic excellence.  The academy is a tuition free, Pre-K to 12th grade academy that offers highly qualified teachers, free transportation, one-to-one student technology, an expansive athletic program, and a rigorous curriculum that is both standards based and culturally responsive.

We are looking for dedicated staff that will allow all students to contribute to classroom learning by sharing and gaining knowledge from each other.  The Old Redford Academy’s philosophy is based on early work of Dr. Maria Montessori Method of Teaching which has a focus on educating “the whole child”. JOB FUNCTION:

Encourages family/parental involvement in the school and provides ongoing support to students and immediate family members, parents/legal guardians of students enrolled at ORA.

DISTRICT DESCRIPTION: Old Redford Academy District is a charter district (public school academy) that serves approximately 950 students. Old Redford Academy is located in Detroit, Michigan. The district houses a GSRP Preschool program, elementary school, middle school, 9th grade academy, and high school.

● Work closely with staff on issues germane to supporting homeless, adjudicated, and disengaged youth.

● Work closely with building administrators to provide support for truant students.

● Analyze information gained through record reviews and interviews to determine environmental impacts and appropriate resource needs; integrate gained information into written a report that includes a support plan.

● Maintain an ongoing liaison with community agencies and other resources to meet student needs; refer parents and students to agencies when appropriate.

● Involves parents/families in the educational activities of the program: (1) to emphasize their role as the principal influence on the child's education and development, and (2) to assist parents/families to increase their knowledge, understanding, skills and experience in basic child development.

● Assist other services areas of the program with direct and indirect services.

● Participates in the training of families as requested.

● Provides community resources for families.

● Participates in recruitment activities.

● Participates in professional development, maintains appropriate certification and qualifications and keeps current in changing pedagogy.

● Regular predictable attendance.

● Establishes a relationship of trust and rapport with the families of the children.

● Communicates with families to facilitate positive interaction within the program.

● Serve on student support teams and building committees at assigned schools.

● Review student records to identify previous barriers and/or interventions.

● Provide individual and/or group support in response to school-wide crisis.

● Participate in professional development activities aimed at current trends and best practices.

● Other duties as assigned, not to include student discipline, lunch duties.
